We did a lot of the Spanish customs in my family. My father was a jack of all trades, Rancher, Builder, Farmer, in the Navy as most of my family served in the military as well. One of my uncles while in Spain traced our heritage all the way to Spain. Since I was taller then most Hispanic girls around me and lighter skin I thought it was because of my Spanish links.I can understand the Spanish language just a bit. I can keep up with my tias (aunts) in conversation but answer them back in English. The language was something I did not pick up I think it was due to the fact I was raised in Calif as a child and in school we were not allowed to speak Spanish in school or we would get spanked. My parents encouraged us to speak English even at home. I think it was a mistake but it was a choice they made, and we as we got older never embraced the language again. Pity. My two older sisters picked it up a lot better my second eldest was even able to speak it a lot, but she was not raised in Calif which I think was the reason.

On my mother side she was a good at cooking, she had the magic skill of cooking when there was no food in the house she kept us well fed. When someone was feeling bad she fed us, any trouble going on with our life she fed us. There was always something in her foods that made us feel better. Anyone that tasted her food wanted to be her friend, their was something magical about her food. My mother used to tell me story's of how the women of my home town would go to her mother my grandmothers house for advice she would read their cards, offer them herbal remedies. Although she did say it I am pretty sure my grandmother and her mother before her were la curandera which is healers in Spanish. There was always a special energy when me and my sisters got together. Some special skill that each of us possessed I like to think it came from my grand mothers side.

A few years ago I did my DNA testing with ancestry. It came back 60 percent Native American and 30 percent Spanish. The rest large part of Portugal, some Jewish, African, and even Ireland and England Wales. I was shocked that I had more Native American then Spanish. Intrigued with the Native American part I wanted to see if we actually had any Newer Indian in us. I say newer cuz if your native American dna from these tests most likely you came from Aztecs and Mayans at a certain point. There is no dna results that will verify this only certain Indian tribes. My daughter had some Andean in her which means close to Mayans. Its fascinating to see how far my family has migrated. I am still researching my family tree to see if there was any Apache in us. There was a last Apache chief who was here in Texas that migrated to New Mexico area he had our last name so I am trying to see if I can link him to us.

Ancestry is also always updating as they get more areas more accurate and as more of my family joins. I am hoping the Indian tribes will share their dna with us some day but I doubt it. There is too much at stake with the Casino revenues.

I have found many new cousins while doing ancestry and with these cousins come photos from long ago. Great Grand parents pictures I had no idea existed still. I cried every time I got a pic of a new ancestry. Its like finding a lost family member. I have helped cousins who were adopted find their real parents, I have embraced the ones who havent found their parents but they are happy to have found us. Family. I have heard new stories about our family that was fascinating. Like how an uncle and cousin were extras on the set of the movie with John Wayne The Alamo. They were Mexican soldiers. I heard another story of how an aunts husband was best friend with Cortez, there is a story/legend about the famous chase.

I am still researching. Its been a lot of fun. I hope to find more information as I continue to dig and hope that new cousins reach out to me to see how they were raised. I am a proud Texan, even though I was born and raised as a child in Calif middle school I was raised mostly here along with my family and cousins in a very small town sw of San Antonio. Where everyone knew your name, where you lived, who were your siblings. LOL yah that sort of town but I wouldnt have had it any other way.I lived many years on a ranch. My father first worked out in the hill country along with my cousin and uncles on ranches before a lot of them joined the service. They were cowboys, they were Vaquero. https://www.thestoryoftexas.com/discover/campfire-stories/vaqueros
Another neat story was from my Ortiz side was the husband of my great aunt Enriqueta Ortiz she was married to Juan Mosqueda he was friends and neighbors with in the picture the famous Gregorio Cotez. he was also the God father of their child Frances Mosqueda. Cortez was a Mexican folk legend.
This is to keep track of my new toxin free way of eating.

This is a combo of Sugar free diet,
Intermittent diet. and what they call Paleo and Keto diet. Mostly
meats, fats, veggies and some fruit. No processed foods! No calorie
counting. Chewing slowly, Drinking lots of Alkaline water. Eating between the hours of 10am and 7pm only.

My name is Samantha and I am a sugaroholic, a lot of people have no idea they are sugar addicted I didnt. First week your off of it if you go cold turkey like I did the first time, you get flu like symptoms from the withdrawals its that bad, you get the shakes, headaches, your body feels like crap, you sweat and you will do almost anything for some sugar, you dream about it, you will want it so bad a lot cant make it the first week without cheating a bit. Just one more piece they say it can't hurt, can't be rude need to eat some birthday cake. All processed foods are made with sugar even milk. If you can't go one day, without some kind of sugar without thinking I can't wait till tomorrow to get my soda, coffee with sugar etc..you are sugaroholic.

Since I was a kid my father wanted something sweet way into the night after dinner, ice cream with peaches, sugar cereal bowl what ever my mom could make, I grew up I had to have dessert at night. It came to a point in my life where if I didnt have something with sugar on it, my body would start to shake my face would feel dumb, almost a paralyzed state of not being able to move a bit in my facial features felt like I was having a stroke, I asked the doctor about it, maybe I was having a heart stroke? Nope...diabetic? since it runs in my family, nope that wasn't it. Found out after being off sugar after two weeks it was just my body going thru withdrawals wanting more sugar. Always felt better for a bit after having some sugar substance, then it would happen again a vicious circle. My knees were going out on me cuz of my weight, if I kept on the weight I would eventually need knee surgery I just knew it they ached so bad in the cold weather.. Not being able to do things with my family like walk fast in my daughters campus to keep up with everyone was embarrassing to me. Not being able to ride a bike with my son was disappointing, I used to love riding bikes. I love to swim but I am just to tired. Worried that I might not fit in an airline seat, worried if I fell down could you get back up without help. Feeling young but your body feeling so old. Yah that was me.

=============================

Prior two weeks b4 I started, I started to cut down on sugars never ate
any past noon especially the desserts, tried a few days not eating after
7pm went on and off with that very hard to do. Doing this slowly this time, tried sugar free diet
for a whole month once but got off of it after the month challenge was
gone. Felt good during that time, hope to feel that way again.

July 11th Start date with no sugar all day, no process foods.
Meats, Veggies only, No calorie counting-July 11-13th Have pretty bad
headaches start drinking more water 8oz-6. My suggestion if your going to start this make sure to have a few days off a week would be better, do it on the weekend your going to feel like crap and can barely move if your a sugaroholic like I was :(Felt hungry a lot ate lots of boiled eggs.

July 14th Headaches lifted also a kind of haze that I seemed to be in

July 15th the sugar cravings are pretty bad, its all I can think
about but on the up side fruit have become my new best friend in
moderation of course but the taste is intensify now. Try to keep busy so
I wont be thinking of sweets, also had a dream of a straw berry
milkshake that I was drinking it lol

Would also like to add the first week of no sugar I had massive hair loss when taking a shower, after the second week it stopped, I think my body just went into shock.

July 19th Nine days being sugar free I woke up feeling GREAT!!!! started my exercises 1 mile every other day walking. I am doing this every other day because the last time I tried to walk a mile every day I got heel spurs and I was down for weeks in a cast. As I lose more weight I will increase my exercise.

July 20th started the 7/10am Intermittent fasting diet where you
only eat from 10am to 7pm most people do 11am-7pm but I find I need to
go places do things and I cant wait around till 11am to eat so 10am is
working good good link to it. This is easier in the morning then at
night. I am used to snacking at night so this has been really hard on
me. http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fitness/archive/2013/05/17/intermittent-fasting-diet.aspx

Also this is about the time July 20th and 21st
that the nightmares started. Two nights of nighmares was wearing me out
when I awoke. Luckily after those first two start up days I have been
nightmare free.

July 22nd-23rd the hunger pains at night and noise associated with it have started in my stomach. Hubby said and from what I read its my stomach breaking up the food. Need to read more on it, will link up later. Ok its later...its just what he said its not that I am hungry its just digesting food, did more research said to try to drink some mint/peppermint tea to stop the noise or water..I tried just water didnt help but tried the tea yes it does help!!! Stock up on Mint tea. :)

July 24th Marks two weeks sugar free and four days on the Intermittent fasting diet. Lost only 4 lbs but
that is about 2 lbs a week so its ok, feel less bloated. Morning and
afternoons are better then the evening times, it would help if I could
get to bed early but sometimes that is not the case when your a mom and
have an elderly father that sleeps all day but is up most the night. It
was suggested last night that I find a button pants try it on and go by
how I lose that outfit will be on me as time goes by rather then always
go by the scale. Still doing my mile walking I have skipped a few days
depending on how I feel and how much walking I have done that day. Good
video on how our fat cells work and why not to go by the scale. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF3rmi4DJAw&feature=youtu.be

July 31 Marks three weeks sugar free one of the easiest weeks yet, the mint tea helps at night with the hunger sound pains, its getting easier not to eat so late at night brushing my teeth helps, my period came as usual for my age that is, but I still lost some weight during this time which I thought was weird being bloated, I had at least two nightmares this week and one where I was getting frustrated with a woman at Baskin robbins for not getting my order right lol. The weight was falling off every day till the last two days. I have lost a total of 10 lbs. Still getting sugar cravings but its just like a memory now. The thought of eating greasy foods like french fries or hamburger with buns makes me ill. I can't eat a big breakfast anymore its either a small breakfast or my protein shake can't have both at the same time so yes I have noticed the amount of food I eat is getting smaller and smaller now. I still have the mentality that 7pm is coming I better eat what I can!!!! its hard to fight that and if I over eat I get sick to my stomach. Exercise is every other day I walk a mile so far its been good on my feet, plus I try to park places far off and I try to do a lot more walking on the farm, on the days I dont do my exercise are usually the days I have to haul six buckets of water to refill my chickens water bins I keep in there. In all a good week. I got one more week left to break my no sugar free record. "Crosses fingers"

Aug 7 Marks four weeks sugar free, portion size is smaller not because I made it like that its because I can't eat as much anymore and I am not forcing it. Sugar Cravings are not that bad, but I am still craving a bit but I think I am at the point where I could control myself if I had once piece of chocolate without going over board but I havent as yet. I only lost one pound during the whole week, I am constipated I have taken natural laxatives but it does not seem to be working much, exercise is the same I might need to step it up but I was really hoping to get the pounds off my feet to be able to exercise more, my feet have been swollen for months now and adding pressure to it exercising hurts. Its frustrating to lose so much then flexing on that one pound all week, they tell me I shouldn't get on the scale but if I dont I feel I am not motivated enough. I feel it in my clothes I am wearing that everything is fitting better, I feel better over all. Night times I still hard but in all its been a good month. So total of 11 pounds in a month.

Aug 15 Marks five weeks sugar free, I have actually been weighing myself one day b4 the day I am suppose to be weighing myself I goofed. So correcting myself to weigh in every Tue now. Weight is...to follow......2 lb more this week total of 13 pounds. The last following weeks I have been learning how to eat smart at fast foods and restaurants. Burgers the thought of eating one from McD's or Wendys just gross me out, but from a good burger joint its ok, I just omit the french fries and soda, I stick to BQ places without the sauce or sides, Subway is another place to have a good 6 inch tuna sandwich on wheat bread. Plus I always if I do have fast food with any carbs like the hamburger bun to have it during lunch time this way I can burn it off the rest of the day. I ate for the first time since I started this at a restaurant breakfast at Jims Restaurant I was thinking the right thing to do was order an omelet but I really didnt want to eat their caged eggs, what I really wanted was a pancake so I ordered one pancake and one bacon which theirs tasted gross the bacon so never doing that again, and unsweetened tea. I am still doing well at stop eating at 7pm. I drink my smooth move tea at night so I can be regular in the morning, so far so good finally not feeling so bloated. I have been having trouble with not having much strength now. I can't lift the 50 lb bags of feed anymore, feeling tired, but I think thats cuz of lack of sleep but started taking B12 to help with energy levels we will see if it helps..

Aug 22 Sorry forgot to write. No change in weight. Still doing pretty good. Just still really tired and sleepy all the time. Still trying to adjust to all this.

Notes:

Buying Fresh fruits, veggies and pasture raised meats is expensive, however once you stop buying processed foods you will find out you will be able to afford this better now. I found out this last week when I realized I actually had money left over b4 the next payday in my grocery acct.
I found out the Native Americans is very vast, so it was hard to link it to any particular Indian tribe, though I do have my maiden last name linked to an Apache Warrior in South Texas. Most the Mexicans come from what I like to call the Old Indian tribes, Aztec, Mayas, etc...its a big mixture. I am currently researching the "Mestizos in Mexico"

African, Greek, Italian, Jewish I am linked to them all, along with it, I am connected to multiple cousins 1st, 2nd 3rd etc...I have always had a large family now its more then I can imagine. Was it worth it, I think so, my mother passed away so I can't do her DNA testing but I did my father so I am hoping with his and comparing to mine I will see what might have been my moms DNA and what I got from her. I was also fascinated that though my siblings might have the same DNA from our parents they might have a less or more percentage of something, for example I had 24% Spanish but my one sister might have 28% and yet another sister might have less 20%.

So you send away for the kit, after about a week it comes in, you spit in it making sure you don't eat or drink anything b4 doing it, mix it with the blue mixture it comes with, seal it up in the prepaid box log online and they will notify you when they receive it and let you know when its being processed mine was about 3-4 weeks.

I plan to do my husbands next then my kids next, they are curious on what percentage they will have from both their parents, this has also made me do more history research on my family, my father and my older aunts and uncle are getting on years, I need to get information from them before they pass away, once they are gone my link to information will be gone as well as them :(

This is important to research this for my kids. Americans are so mixed in our race, their shouldn't even be any racist in our great country since I bet if everyone did this they would be surprised on what they really find out and how mix we really are

If your interested I can get you 10% off plus bless me too
Happy DNA testing.
I add the lemon because I plan to have a few lemon trees as well as do have an apple tree where I can make apple cider vinegar. With lemons it gives it a nice taste to it. You can use goat milk or cow. I have a goat so I use goat milk.

I use crushed pecans, chopped garlic chives, and a bit of olive oil

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "geneva"; font-size: x-small;">1 gallon whole pasteurized or raw milk ( I use raw goat milk)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "geneva"; font-size: x-small;">¼ cup apple cider vinegar or distilled vinegar I also use juice from 2 lemons.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "geneva"; font-size: x-small;"> Salt to taste I use you can also use different flavor salts as well, there is a lot of flavors out there.

Best to use stainless steel pot heat milk stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Get the temp up to 170'-180' once you get it there keep it for 10min at that temp, make sure to keep stirring this is the time it can scorch.

Once 10min is up slowly pour in the vinegar and add lemon juice if you like, if you don't use it you might want to use a bit more vinegar but be careful don't use too much. Curds will start to form as you stir gently, turn off heat. Slowly
Slowly pour in the colander some people like to grab it with a large spoon either way is fine.
Tie the corners into a knot, making a draining bag, and suspend this bag over a bowl to drain for a few hours, or until the queso blanco has reached the consistency you prefer. Years ago we bought our property that had a lot of pecan trees, we were told by the Texas Agriculture center that we shouldn't plant anything under the trees that it would not grow.

Determined we planted anyways with hit and misses today this is what our garden looks like above:

Yes its true some things can't grow under the trees, but that's because its too shaded and needs more light like tomatoes.

We tried digging but we would hit thick roots. We were also told the roots would kill the plants and might be toxic we decided not to go that route...., however we have made a Hugelkultur key garden pictured above which is filled with pecan limbs, sheep manure and good old dirt on top and it seems to be doing fine.

Aloe Vera, carrots, onions, lettuce, basil, rosemary, tarragon, oregano, lemon verbena, flowers, sage, parsley, sunflowers, garlic chives, chili's, mulberries, ginger, are all things I have grown so far successfully.

I prepared this document for my Women Preppers group its the basic on coupons, I was really into it awhile back but got busy with other things so sort of let it stop, but now I noticed my containers are getting empty tooth brushes, soaps, deodorant, razors etc so its time to get busy again. Couponing does take some time, the more time you give it the more you will save.

==============================

This is the easiest way to start off couponing, yes there is a lot of
other ways on savings you can learn all that too, but this is the
basic's to get you started. 10 cents here 50cents there it all adds up
in the end.

1. Collect the Sunday coupons, ask
your family, friends, neighbors for theirs never hurts to ask especially
if they don’t use them. Look in recycle bins. There is a few ladies that have access to coupons you might find them thru friends or Craigslist or coupon groups they can hook you up for a small fee, yes its suppose to be illegal to sell them but it happens anyway thank goodness.

2. There will
be Smart source, Redplum and sometimes Procter & Gamble are the
main coupons, mark on the front of it the date that they came out.

3. Go to couponmom.com
sign up its free, don’t go anywhere else on the page later you can do
that it will get you confused, hit “Grocery deals” Then “Your state”
then the store you want to go too. Later you can try the other stores to
see who has the better deals

4. It will tell you on
percentage what you will save from 100% down. I usually buy fom 50% on
up I consider a good deal and will stock up on the items. S is for Smart
Source and R is for Redplum, PG is Procter & Gamble go to the date
it says and your coupon will be in that one, cut out.

5.
Things to remember – If your coupon is for $1.00 and your item is on
sale for 90cents they are not going to give you 10cents back and it
might be a problem if it’s the only item your buying so I would advice
to buy something else too you need, to offset it. Also Target online,
Walgreens, Family dollar and Rite Aid also has their own coupons so
check those out too.

Other ways to save, start a grocery price
book, this can be a notebook, on your computer, on your phone write down
the normal prices of items you buy all the time and compare it with
other stores, this way if you see a deal you will know you are getting a
better deal or not.

If you see it a product on sale and you use it a lot this is the time to buy it now. Rotate, rotate even on shampoos and soaps.

Good luck and happy savings.

If your looking for a bigger coupon holder try a binder with inserts.

Our new quail cage the eggs roll out, automatic water

We gave up on the rabbits for a few reasons, 1. its too hot they wont breed in this hot Texas heat having to put out ice cold bottle of water for them to lean on was a pain 2. Not a fan of rabbit meat. Dont get me wrong if something happened and I had nothing else to eat I would gladly consume rabbit meat in a heart beat thinking it was steak :)

Quail have been so easy to raise, they are cute, they are tasty! You can eat the quail eggs too! We have been raising them for about a year now or more got a batch of eggs from a local boy in San Antonio bought ourselves an incubator with a battery back up a must if your into Preparedness like us and hatched out our first set of quail.

Eggs are pretty tasty I prefer my chicken eggs over quail but they are ok to cook with I dont have any trouble selling or bartering them either. My daughter loves the Chinese recipes that have quail eggs in them, hubby just likes to boil them and cook them in with some bacon grease and a bit of seasoning....yum

They lay pretty much all year round so thats another plus, they make these odd sounds at night that could be a downer for people who live in the city, its mostly the males that do that so if you can only keep a few it wont be so much of a problem.

The chicks are so tiny they do this adorable play dead thing on their side when sleeping with their legs sprawled out, they are fast got to watch it they run faster then a lil mouse! When we transport them from incubator to their brooder we have to be careful they have popped out so fast and ended up on the ground at a full run.

Later as they get older the chill out and are easy to handle, hubby says they are easy to butcher too we just did a batch not long ago we have it in the freezer and we ate some, talk about some good eatings! Its got to be one of my favorite poultry meats now.

I really recommend having quail my favorite are the Texas AM yellows/whites...but we mostly raise the coturnix here is a link to Back Yard chickens with the subject of them if you are considering raising them. http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/102281/coturnix-quail-basics-information-and-pictures-galore

If you didn't notice I had on the side a small link section for Prepping, I just added more onto it recently so take a look if your interested mostly basics. My family got into "Preparedness" yrs ago it went along the lines of homesteading it just sort of merged together, hubby always knew about it and was gently leading me to be more prepared, it wasn't until I read the book, "One second after" by William Forstchen that I got really scared that I wasn't prepared enough.

Its about an EMP (Electronic Magnetic pulse) happening in the United States. what if, then I started thinking of all the smaller things that could happen, how really prepared was I? ....breaking down in a car, losing power because of a storm, losing a job, to bigger things that could happen like financial collapse of the USA, earth quake on the west coast, train derailing near us with chemicals that we would have to evacuate etc...

I started inventory what we had, what we needed and started buying, bartering, flea marketing everything else I did a lot of researching. Am I completely done Preparing? Heck no, but I am more prepared now then I was yrs ago. I have a more peace of mind now. A few yrs ago I saw first hand what panicking and no planning could create as the hurricane Rita was coming down on Houston they did a mass evacuation from the city, Cars stalled everywhere, gas ran out along the hwy ways, people got stuck, every store within 10miles of hwy got bought out on most everything, especially water, food, diapers, meds. Every hotel near us was booked, and I do mean even the smaller run down ones were taken up, I just couldn't believe the craziness of it all.

Prepping has gotten a bad rap thru the years thanks to Doomsday prepper tv show, it has brought some crazy people out in the public eye, but it also opened some eyes so I can't say the show was that bad, we actually learned a few things, plus I know now to say, "We are into preparedness" rather then "We are preppers" I dont know what it is but people understand and are calmer about the first more then the last statement. The movement has taken off especially after Katrina, where there was so many people huddled in that stadium waiting for the government to come help them, FEMA nearly born didnt do so well, big eye opener for many folks, it has become a lesson in history for any one wanting examples of Disaster relief gone bad.

The Gov even suggest for you to have at least 3 days of food prepared for emergency, I really think they should up that to a pay check worth of food at least. I have heard of so many story's where peoples food stash has helped them when they have lost their jobs for a few months. Being prepared is not stupid, its not being crazy, its smart. Even the boys scouts motto is be prepared. Do you have water in your car? A first aid kit? Does your family know where to go if you lose communication via cell phones? If you lost your job now do you enough food to last you till you can get another? Lights go out in storm do you have candles, lanterns flashlights handy? Do you have extra cash on hand in case you cant access the ATM machines. How prepared are you?

Here is some helpful links to get started you can always buy them locally but if you already have amazon prime you can get free shipping for it.
Hubby and son

We are lucky to have an awesome bartering community near us, once a month or it varies depending on the weather, we meet up and barter stuff we made or any extra stuff we have on our farm with other individuals from all over the San Antonio area.

The Human Path school in San Antonio is the one that sponsors it recently they moved to a down town location which is closet to us to get to now. We have a lot of fun, meet like minded folks, talk, learn, make connections, barter some awesome stuff, herbs, meats, nuts, honey, home made aprons, hats, walking sticks, home made breads, cheeses, tinctures, jellys, salsa's the list goes on.

The art of bartering is lost on some folks its cute to see some new people trying to barter for the first time, I have always thought it was easy but to some folks they get really nervous about it. For now I barter what I think is fair but if it came down to really having to barter for our lively hood I would probably be more skillful on getting the best deal. Some Suggestions on how to use movies for unit studies:

1. Reading: Find out how Actual the movie is from from the real history of the event.

I have found out even if the movie is not accurate you can go over the real history facts with your children. Do a research on what really happened. For example "Black Beauty" the movie only shows some of Beautys Masters read the real book to find out who were the others. My daughter was excited to find out who else had owned Beauty and started reading without being asked. Now that's real inspiration.

2. Geography: Grab your globes its time for geography. Check out the location of the movie your watching or going to watch. Get a heads up before you watch it so your kids can get an idea where its at even if it is pretend "Hollywood studios"

3. History: History lesson time, find out the era in which the movie was suppose to be and find out other events that happened around that same time. If in another country find out who the current leader was in that year. Is about a real person? Learn more about this person and why they have become famous. Have the kids skim over a biography book to find an interesting knew fact about the person that they didnt show in the movie.

4. Life learning lesson/bible: What did you learn from this movie, friendship, enemys, greed, happiness, trustworthy, betrayal, hope, sadness, lost, honor ect. What is good and bad about each one? Discuss bible lessons associated with each one.

5. Writing lesson: Have them do a small paragraph or book report on what they did and did'nt like about the movie and how they would change the ending.

6. Math: While math is one of the hardest things to think of when applying to any unit study it can be done with a little imagination.

Depending on the age of your child and what they are studying that semester incorporate it into your unit study math. Examples

Scavenger hunt: Keep note of things that you see a lot in the

movie and when your child sees it have them write it down. They dont have to be accurate only when they do the math. Then at the end of the movie they can add them together or subtract or multiply.

Miles: Did the main character travel places? Find out just how far he traveled with a little geography help then add it all up. For the older create and ask them Problem solving problems like how long did you think it took them to get to destination.

Are you learning about graphs? Do a graph on something on the movie.

Can you add fractions anywhere in the movie

Problem solving problems Use the characters and events in the movie to do this.

Arts & Craft/The Arts: Do a craft that is will remind you of the movie, study the Culture of the time event, costume, and the foods maybe even create your own dish to eat at the same time your watching the movie. Try something new!

Stop the movie! Dont be scared to stop the movie to discuss a topic that you are learning about, it may be entertaining and the kids may think its a free day, but it is after all school time.

Prepare early: If you know the movie your going to do prepare everything before hand if you can. I had this problem because we would watch a movie and I couldnt prepare a lesson plan till days, weeks later and a lot of the movie is already forgotten and not fresh any longer.

We have an Excalibur no complaints other then that it makes a loud humming noise which drives me crazy, luckily it works fast unlike my old Ronco one that will take more then a few days, but at least my Ronco is quiet, I usually use it for drying my herbs.

My new vacuum seal attachment works great on the jars, I prefer the wide mouth lid one, so I am trying now to buy wide mouth jars I just think it works a whole lot better & more room. This works best for dried foods, it does not replace canning. Nuts, flour, grains, it works great on.

Its best to keep these kind of foods out of sunlight, I usually vacuum seal them, then put them in a dark container with a gamma lid. This picture on top I will be using in the next couple of months so they are here to be pretty :)Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07462351108932489047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2551025242054535702.post-70043719187589034612012-10-28T01:07:00.001-05:002012-10-28T01:07:31.912-05:00

Its almost time for Turkey Processing. This year we are doing a little differently and going to have a class on raising and processing turkeys. I am hoping its a big hit. We only have a slot for 8 people we might do more but we still have regular customers to consider who don't care to see the processing.

Its been an interesting year raising turkeys and pigs the same time, lots more work but its been fun. The pigs are at the butcher should be getting it back soon so we can send it to get smoked and cured. Turkeys havent been to much trouble except when they were little they committed mass suicide and jumped in a feeder can that someone got left open and smothered each other b4 I could find them :(

I like working with the Bronze they are calm as I call them the Zen birds. Nov 10th is processing time.

I've had in the past animals that were picky mostly my cats but I swear these pigs are the ultimate queen and kings of being picky. I've tried all the pig feed that they have at the feed store for pigs and they turn their nose up at it., preferring only slop from inside our house & corn. My husband said, they will get hungry they will eat it, NOPE instead they break out of their pen and escape.

One day we came home to find the dogs and pigs greeting us at the front gate..sigh.. so husband bought some strong fencing and fenced in half the field that needed to be fenced still, for awhile they were really happy, tearing up the fenced in area grass & tilling our land for us, then they started to escape again, not only that they ignore us as we try to get them back in the pen.

I thought goats were bad, I keep having to mend in the fence, they knocked over the electric fence we had up so its full of mud now & hubby hasnt had the time to put it back up. We measured them unfortunately they are not ready for the market yet :( I did manage to find some feed, its a mesh of oat, wheat, milo, corn all mixed in one, I have added corn to it and some dog food cuz they seem to really like the dog food mix it all with water. The feed seems to be working now, I just wish I could put them in the field again so they can pasture range.

I admit they sort of scare me and the nose they make is like a dino calling its freaky. I have no qualms what so ever taking them to the market. Lesson learned on raising pigs, we plan to raise more but not sure on raising them for breeding we will see.

http://homesicktexan.blogspot.com/2008/05/how-to-render-lard.html this is a good recipe for rendering pork fat. I can't wait!! also for the pecans and pork chops!

Husband and I have been fascinated by the Bali houses for awhile now. Bali houses or cottages are little houses connected to each other. This one is in a compound but bali houses have been separated with no walls. If we did something like this we would use vines & trees to shield ourself's from other to give us some privacy.

Each house has its own function. You have lil cottages that you sleep in only with bathroom, then you have a separate kitchen & another for a dining room. You might have another for your living room/entertainment center, yet another for storage. I can see this as either family living or living with other family members or friends & sharing the kitchen, entertainment cottages. You could even have a separate one for laundry.

Most have lil cottages have side walks that connect them. We would put over a cover of some sort so on the days it rained we wouldn't get so wet.

Another great thing about the Little houses is that if you buy some land you can build this slowly, one room at a time. Instead of getting into debt you just build what you can from materials donated or bought frugally someplace.

I hope to see more of these in the future.Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07462351108932489047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2551025242054535702.post-16195426312684140282012-02-24T21:10:00.000-06:002012-02-24T21:10:51.787-06:00Mulch and more Mulch

Yup today they brought us some mulch so I can plant around our berry bushes. We wont be able to put it on till Sunday since this Saturday is our big Blue & Gold for the cubscout, but I wanted to share with everyone.

It was around 22yrds for $350 I didnt think they were going to fit in that tiny little entry but the guy was a great truck driver and drove in pretty easily. Beautiful day today to have them deliver this I am so excited!Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07462351108932489047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2551025242054535702.post-68511312237460404582012-02-08T00:40:00.001-06:002012-02-08T00:45:21.091-06:00New improved mobile chicken coop

So hubby has redid our new chicken/turkey mobile. He added the water and feeder to the outside of the coop instead now. This means I don't have to go into the coop anymore on feedings. I am really happy with this coop. It just needs the pulls in front to help pull it and I am all set.

As you can see its already being put to full use. We got the 4-H broilers we bought from someone in there now. Hoping to keep them in there a few more weeks to eat some grass get fresh air etc..b4 we have to butcher them.

Today on National Geographic we watched a show called Dooms day preppers. What a neat show on prepping. Some people may think they are a bunch of nuts but I think it was a good show to help show how to prepare for any kind of emergency not just the end of doomsday.

I have what some people might call a Bug out bag in my car, to me its just a emergency bag with essentials in case we get stuck & have to start to walk home. One of the things I learned tonight to add to my pack is some dry socks put in baggies. The kids and I almost wear the same kind now so this is good especially if our feet get wet you need to keep dry feet.

Another good tip I learned tonight was on preserving eggs & cheese. This comes in handy not only for prep food in case of emergency but also when my chickens lay a lot in spring I can now store them with mineral oil for months if kept cool, this way in winter when they stop laying I will have some eggs available.

Also learned I can buy cheese from store, and wax it for longer life. Wow didnt know about that I need to learn more. Her site is awesome and if you live in Utah you need to go see her and take her courses.

http://preparednesspro.com

Will I watch them again. Heck yes! Can't wait for the next show. I kid hubby and tell him we will be on the next show next yr. What are we prepping for? To be self sufficient on our farm so don't rely on store bought product for foods is our main goal, this way we will be ready for any emergency that may come are way just have a better fruitful life is all we want.

Paleo Diet should be called the Farmers diet
NOTE: It became so big here I decided to create my own Paleo blog to keep track to read more on this diet check out...http://paleofarmersdiet.blogspot.com/

My husband and I started the Paleo diet for 30days another name they like to call it is the "Cave man diet" I think more of it as the "Farmers diet". The main reason I call it this is because most of the stuff you will be eating can be found on a farm like meat, veggies nuts & berries, so unless you live on a farm or fish a lot this diet can be pretty expensive. To keep it frugal you need to have some connections or know how to get this stuff other then the super market......No wheat, Pasta, beans etc..

The diet consist of a lot of lean meats of fish, chicken, some lean pork, all kinds of veggies, fruits & nuts (except peanuts) To help on this quest of our for 30 days maybe longer I bought myself a "Superwave oven" sort of like the Nuwave oven but it was cheaper plus it had a glass dome not plastic, I despise plastic. I am cooking everything in it so far its coming out really good. I did try to make turkey bacon in it, I don't think it came out that well. I made sweet potato fry's my family loved them.

So we have taken out of our diet all processed foods & sugars trying to eat more raw as possible.
We have also omitted dairy some people worry about not having calcium but I am not too worried about that right now since we eat a lot of green leafy stuff which will substitute for it, if we do drink milk its raw milk so easy for our stomachs to digest. After 30 days I will bring back on cheese & yogurt but I really want to make my own from raw milk.

As for the meat luckily a few months ago I stocked up on pasture raised ground meat from a farmer, our fridge is loaded with lamb meat, & I just purchased 21 broilers from a 4-H boy. We are going to keep them on grass for a few weeks to get them healthier. We have pigs that will be ready for the butcher in May along with some stew chickens. I checked out our local flea market on Sat and can find veggies/fruits there a lot cheaper then I do at HEB our local food store.

I have tons of pecans to eat so I have bought some other nuts to mix them up with them for snacks. It is going to be expensive buying all the vegetables right now till we can get our garden growing again.

Some say this is a lot like the atkins I disagree since they encourage you to eat lots of veggies and fruit. We plan to add a little more carbs with Gluten free products after the 30days. Its going back to the basics like I said a "Farmers diet" Note: My husband is following the book completely and more likely he will lose faster then I will, he has omitted fruit from his diet for the first 30days. I am trying to eat it only in the morning sometimes for snack. I need some kind of sugar or I will go mad! lol

Ways to save on the Paleo diet: (Will be adding more as I continue)
Check craigslist: Farmers advertise there as well as individual people on selling stuff. Check out the "Farm Garden section"
Check out local farmers market. Eat whats in season.
Raise your own chickens most cities will allow so many chickens in your area check out your State regulations.
Barter with a friend who likes to fish.
Find a whole cow, pig, lamb on craigslist and go halfs with another family tell them to take to butcher for you. (Make sure you know how the animal was raised)
Join real foods group look for them locally thru facebook or yahoogroups.

===================================================

Special Note: When I first started this I didnt realize I was going to have such a withdrawal from sugar & that my body was going to get sick from detoxing. By the second day I thought I was going to crawl out of my skin it was then I realized I addicted I was to sugar! By the third day i was fine full of energy. Fourth day i started to get sick with what I thought was a cold aches, pains, sneezing like crazy, nose running. So for the fourth, Fifth & Sixth day I treated it like a cold. I took more vitamin C but I took cold meds at night cuz I couldnt sleep.

By the seventh day it was completely gone its then I realized it wasn't a cold but my body detoxing. If I had only know it was my body detoxing I would have skipped the cold meds and drank more herbal teas and water. So this is warning to all who may start this it may not be that your getting sick but your body detoxing. Two weeks into it I tried to sneak a capachino drink & I thru it up and had stomach pains all day I guess that goes to show that my body doesen't really want that sugar anymore. The body knows what it really wants!
Just as I love the many ideas of pallets I love barrels too! So I decided to start collecting ideas on how to use barrels.
Well its been a busy Oct/Nov here on the Farm. as you can see our orchard did outstanding this yr I am still picking pecans! Below is our new piglets, first time raising them, and no they will not be pets. They are cute and I have a hard time not falling for them.

I've sold a lot of pecans already this yr plus did some awesome trades. I did a few homemade jelly trades from the northwest I am happy cuz I can never get any fresh jelly around here much plus I also traded for a bread maker hardly used.

I've send some to our soldier and I need to send some to family now. I wish I could send some via mail to sell but the cost of postage is just not really worth it plus the cost of someone buying it compared to just buying it at store I dont know.... However our pecans are non sprayed and it is from this yrs crop. While store bought is sprayed and you never know how old they are you know.

Well so much to do I got to get cracking...get it?? cracking? lol

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Well we picked a few bags of these mustang grapes this summer, it was about the only thing that grew around our farm this summer. At least I will have jelly to can. We are still waiting on pecan season, that won't be till the end of Sept. All around us Texas is burning up, its getting scary now.

It always rains on my birthday week so I am hoping it follows tradition and rains on my week.
My dads been away from this heat, he went to visit family in Calif but now its getting hot in Calif too so its time for him to come home. Not much going on right now, just been hiding out in the house its been too hot to go outside to do anything.

We did wake up early in the morning and started clearing up some of the pecan orchard for pecan picking.
I need to prune the roses they say, I've been trying to water when I can, but we have restrictions right now. We need to move some fencing to the garden to cover up my black berries then let the sheep take over the garden, keeping them in there for days will clear the area for our future garden for fall or spring.
Thats about it dull Summer. Hot hot.
Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07462351108932489047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2551025242054535702.post-1681344096469900522011-08-13T13:47:00.001-05:002011-08-13T13:53:04.377-05:00Fall can't come fast enough

Our pecans are almost done!

Fall is so close to us I can taste it but sure don't feel it in our triple digit weather in Texas. I made announcement to my family this yr I am going to get out our fall stuff really early from the shed. If we can't have cool weather here it will look like fall in our house!

My daughter made these flower arrangements for fall can't wait to put them up.

Well as you can see from the picture above our pecans are almost ready! They will start falling down at the end of Sept and continue to fall till the start of Nov. This is a busy time of yr because I will be out there fighting the squirrels picking them morning & afternoon before the squirrels can get their hands on them! I pick in the afternoon too because the winds we have in the early evening hours will knock some more down and the racoons at night will eat them if I don't. The squirrels are a pain because they only eat the tip of the pecan and leave the rest to rot! Luckily my sheep will find those and finish them off!.

After I have gathered enough I take them into Hondo to get them cracked I learned long ago to do this instead of manually having to do this by hand. Hubby bought me a machine pecan cracker but it still takes one at a time & it takes a long time. I barely have enough time to peel the pecans I have!

I will take these pecans and store for us in a freezer for this coming yr for Thanksgiving and Christmas cooking as well as sell a few & this yr I am going to send some to the soldiers. You would think with 80 trees I would have a ton but not all the tree's are still producing and not every yr the tree's produce.

Everyone thought because of the drought we wouldn't have pecans but with the canal's constantly running the roots of our tree's are constantly getting water. The water runs underground about 3 feet & you will hit water. We found that out the hard way when trying to build our septic tank lol.
